A walk through the valley of heavenly flowers
Mayo College Junior School Trekking Expedition
To
Gorson Peak and Tungnath – 2013
Trekking expeditions foster a spirit of risk-taking, cooperative team work, the capacity to face and effectively deal with challenging situations with courage and determination.
Rolling mountains green with grass,
thick with trees that stand and last,
morning flowers blooming fast,
watered with clear streams that pass.
A group of 42 boys of Mayo College Junior School went for the trekking expedition to Gorson Peak and Tungnath from 28 April to 8 May 2013. The group was escorted by Headmaster Mr Pramod Chaturvedi, Maam Chaturvedi, Paresh Mahawar, Praveen Sharma, Arvind Nahar and Amit Verma.
First trek destination – Gorson Peak was named after the English gentleman who scaled it first. A group started trek from the base station ‘Auli’. Crossing the thick jungle of Alpine & Rhododendrons’, children walk past playing with snow on the way. Filtering sunlight was playing hide and seek with kids. The place offers a panoramic view of Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi (7817mts), Kamet(7756 mts), Mana Parvat(7273mts) and Dunagiri(7066mts).
Walking through lush green meadows were reminding of Switzerland. Mesmerizing sound of the bells of sheep, cows and horses added music in the trekking. Then started the steep mountains, making the route difficult and hard. Though the climb is steep, you can do it easily by trekking ‘slowly’, taking regular breaks when you run out of breath. Climbing it reminded us of prose composed by Kathleen Delicato entitled THE MOUNTAIN
Looking up into the heights, the sky blue,
I begin my ascent of the mountain.
With my first step, steady, honest and true,
My heart's filled with the goal I shall attain.
Though as I reach the higher paths I find
Determination begins to waver.
The rocks and icy winds are so unkind
And erode the courage I did savor.
T'would be easy to give up and go back,
Return to my safe and comforting home.
Then my inner voice cries, "Attack, attack!"
So I grit my teeth and push myself on.
When I reach the summit, see all I've gained,
Well worth all the trials, well worth all the pain.
Second trek destination – Tungnath is the highest shiva temple constructed by Yudhishthira, the eldest among the five Pandavas. Serpentine trek amongst the red, purple and white blooms of Rhododendron, the state flower of Uttarakhand, was a walk through the valley of heavenly flowers.
Two days of camping in Chopta provided the learning experiences for children. Tent layout, parade inspection, rolling down the slopes, various interactive games and sports were challenging task to do. Day to day activities with limited resources taught us to live in hardship of life. Boys showcased their multiple talents in cultural show put up during camp fire. Their songs, skits and jokes made the camp fire night more starry.
Rafting is yet another activity which children enjoy. We did Rafting from Shivpuri to Ram jhulla. Playing in the laps of mother Ganga, kids go tubsy torby in the staircase rapids that challenges the body and spirit of river runners. The river cuts against the rocky banks, crash into rocks, crevices and breaking into white water rapids, foaming, swirling and falling in a thunderous din.
The grand finale was the visit to Crystal Water Park on the last day. Majestic wave pool, serpent Slides, musical Rain Dance, Water Fall, Dashing Car, heroic bull fighting, etc added glitters in the tour. 5-D movie was icing on the cake.
On completing the destination our headmaster sir praised the group. Thus, provides the Mayoites a positive and healthy channelisation for their abundant energy, enthusiasm and imagination as also an opportunity for them to take their rightful place as the future leaders of the country in myriad spheres of activity.
