JUNIOR SCHOOL TREKKING EXPEDITION TO DODITAAL – MAY 2006
After a long and hectic spring term, it was time to check our grit and to breathe fresh mountain breeze. Keeping up the tradition, 32 students of Junior School alongwith their Headmaster Mr. P Chaturvedi and two Housemasters Mr. Yash Saxena and Mr. P Mahawar went on a trekking expedition to DODITAAL in Uttaranchal, a high altitude lake and a meadow. It was a 44 kms long trek and the group achieved a height of 11,200 feet.
On 29th April, we boarded our train to Delhi and then went to Rishikesh in the night. Rishikesh is the Gateway to all known and lesser known destinations in Uttaranchal. We had rested in Rishikesh during the day and attended ‘Aarti” on Triveni Ghat of River Ganga in the evening. We saw the famous ‘Ram Jhula’ upon the holy river Ganga. Next morning, we drove to Uttarakashi which was about 180 kms from Rishikesh. Uttarkashi which was is also a holy town on the banks of River Ganga at an altitude of around 4000 ft. Our group was instructed to rest and acclimatize to mountain situations.
Next day, early morning we left for ‘Sangam – Chatti’, a very small hamlet on banks of River Asi Ganga. The trek for Doditaal begins from here. Our kitchen party and camping helpers joined us from here.
We were given safety instructions by our teachers and after chanting grace, we started on our trek, Our first destination was ‘Bebra Gate’. In the starting of the trek, we crossed dense forest of Pine and Oak trees. Everybody was quite enthusiastic and was catching up good peace. We reached ‘Babra Gate’ at about noon (a distance of 8 kms). As the weather was about to get worse, We pitched out tents and settled ourselves. In the evening, we enjoyed folk dance by some the locals.
Next morning, we left quite early, for out next camp called ‘Manjhi’. It is a distance of 9 kms from ‘Bebra Gate’ and supposedly the difficult most part. The trekking route was very steep and quite narrow at several places Dense Alpine vegetation was also crossed by us which mostly included silver Oaks and Rhododendrons. We reached ‘Manjhi’ at around 11’O’ clock where we pitched our tents on a campsite. From Manjhi, we can look at certain beautiful peaks of Uttaranchal like ‘Bandapoonch’ and ‘Dayara Bugyal’. The weather got worse afternoon and lots of rain and hailstones made us limit ourselves to our tents.
Next day, we left for our final destination ‘Doditaal’ which was 5kms from Manjhi. The trek was very picturesque and exciting as we crossed several glaciers on the way. The first glimpse of Doditaal let us forget all our fatigue as it is a beautiful lake surrounded by snow clad peaks and panorama of nature was Awesome at this place. This grandeur of nature cannot be explainedin words. Everyone was jubiliant and had a great sense of achievement.
Doditaal is ethnically also very important as it is said to be the birth place of ‘Lord Ganesha”. It is also the only abode of “Golden trout’ fishes in Asia. We took a full round of the lake. We stayed here that night and left for our return trek with lots of clicked photographs and fond memories. While returning, We stayed in Manjhi for one night where we had camp fire and several cultural items and Bebra Gate for another night. We came back to Sangomachatti on the 6th day of our trek and stayed in Uttarkashi for the night . We thanked God for the successful completion of our trek without much problems and ailments.
The trek was very difficult for such age group children and the locals had a lot of praise for our group as they said that ours was the first one on this trek with students ageing 10 and 11. Risk factor was great but our boys followed the instructions very well and the expedition was accomplished successfully.
We drove from Uttarakashi to Dehradun where we had visited Gompa, a Tibetan Monastry and the famous IMA – Indian Military Academy. Here we could see the prospective Army Officers being trained. It was a very encouraging and memorable experience.
We also did while water rafting on turbutent water of River Ganga from Kaudiala to Shivpuri, and crossed several rapids enroute.
It was a very adventurous and memorable acturity to conclude our tour with.
We bought back with us fond memories and learnt lessons of caring, sharing, respect for nature, fight with one self in terms of stamina and will power.
We are indeed very thankful to Mr. Pramod Sharma, our Principal and to Mr. P Chaturvedi, our Headmaster to have provided us with such a great opportunity and our teachers Mr. Y Saxena and Mr. Paresh Mahawar to have accompanied us and for have taken good care of us.
