And this shall be for music when no one else is near,
The fine song for singing, the rare song to hear !
That only I remember, that only you admire,
Of the broad road that stretches, and the roadside fire.
The mountains speak directly to us, across the mists of time. The attractions of trekking in particular – the finding of somewhere in particular; the striking up of friendship; the discovery of new springs and waterfalls, unusual plants, rare flowers, strange birds. In the hills, a new vista opens up at very bend in the road.
That is what makes the dauntless Mayoites compulsive trekkers – new vistas, and the charm of the unexpected.
May 1, 2011 was a day filled with fun and frolic. Thirty-one boys and five teachers from Mayo College, Junior School, Ajmer moved towards Kedar Region.
Amidst the dramatic mountains capes of the majestic Kedarnath range stands one of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas' of Kedar or Lord Shiva. Lying at an altitude of 3584 mts. on the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for the Hindus.
The scenic beauty on the way was amazing. High mountains, deep valley, rapids, waterfalls, river Ganges and its tributaries flowing fast encouraged us in reaching our destination.
After a few acclimatizing treks the boys started for the main trek. The trek started with Gayatri Mantra. Boys were very enthusiastic and full of determination. The chirping of birds, jingles of ponies’ bells, snow peaks, colourful flowers, tall trees, waterfalls and fast flowing river makes the way delightful. Accent was steep and continuous drizzling and snowfall made it more difficult. But the firm determination of the boys enabled us in overcoming all the hardships. Many boys felt scarcity of oxygen and were uncomfortable because of high altitude, difference in air pressure, less oxygen and bad weather conditions. The austere conditions were faced boldly as the staff was always ready to render their services.
At the final destination - The Bhairo Peak, trekkers felt as if they were on top of the world. They played with snow balls and started the returning trek. Descending was more difficult as the path was slippery. It was a strenuous task. All the boys were feeling pressure on their feet. They had to control their speed and balanced themselves with gravity.
While returning, the group enjoyed white water rafting in the river Ganga at Rishikesh. The Crystal Water Park was fun time. It was a memorable experience for the boys.
Mayo, Mayo,
we love you well,
with pride our heads do swell !
Trekking Expedition completed in eleven nights and 12 days. We returned to Delhi on May 12, 2011 with experiences as silent as the silent mountains: ‘Oh God! Great is thy might’. At the tender age of nine, ten and eleven, the hearts of thirty-one Mayoites surrendered in devout supplication to the Supreme and sang in unison – Khuda Teri Qudrat…..
We are thankful to Maj Gen KVS Lalotra – Principal, Mayo College Ajmer for giving us this one small mystery, a mystery sweet and satisfying and entirely our own. We also thank our revered Headmaster – Mr. Pramod Chaturvedi, Sir Paresh Mahawar, Sir Praveen Sharma, Mr Amit Verma for their endeavour to make us enjoy, love and appreciate the wonderful sights of nature. Their presence, guidance and support has added sweetness to our lives.
Long Live Mayo ! Long Live Mayoites !

KEDARNATH- Amidst the dramatic mountains capes of the majestic Kedarnath range stands one of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas' of Kedar or Lord Shiva. Lying at an altitude of 3584 mts. on the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for the Hindus. According to legend, the Pandava sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone their sins after the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Shiva eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed, He dived into the ground, leaving behind his hump on the surface. This conical protrusion is worshipped as the idol in the shrine. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva are worshipped at four other places - the arms (bahu) at Tungnath, mouth (mukh) at Rudranath, navel (nabhi) at Madmaheshwar and hair (jata) at Kalpeshwar.
