ADVENTURE TOUR TO SAURASHTRA, GUJRAT
The spring term ended after a lot of hard work and activities. We all were very excited for our long awaited adventure tour to Saurashtra, Gujrat. 42 boys of Junior School along with their Headmaster Mr. P. Chaturvedi, Mrs. J.Chaturvedi, Mr. P. Mahawar and Mr. Y Saxena left in charted buses for Gujrat on 30th April 2005 night.
Our first destination was Mehsana where we reached in the morning. One of our distinguished parents Mr. Dilip Chaudhry had organized our stay in the Water World resort at Mehsana. As we settled ourselves, no one could resist plunging into the sparkling blue pools of Asia’s biggest water part – Shanku’s water park. We enjoyed the thrilling slides and splash pools of the water park thoroughly. It was a great experience to start our activities with.
Next day morning, whole group conveyed thir gratitude to Mr. Chaudhry for his modest gesture and left for Sasan Gir. Sasan Gir is a small hamlet about 40 kms from Junagarh. We reached our campsite called ‘Lion Safari Camp’ in the evening. It is a lovely campsite amidst a mangrove having all modern amenities. By this time, we had already started having a feel of wilderness. Next day, we visited the historical fort of Junagarh. This fort was built by Indian rulers but later conquered by Muslim intruders and was lastly ruled by the Nawab of Junagarh. The ruins of the fort revealed the fierce battle between the Indian and the Muslim rulers.
Early morning of next day, we left for the world famous – ‘Gir Lions Sanctuary’, the only abode of Asiatic lions in the world. We were all in our safari Jeeps and happened to seen hundreds of Deer, Antelopes, Cheetals, Sambhar, wild boars etc, but there was no trace of lions. We were losing hope of tracing a lion when suddenly our experienced guide ‘Murad’ traced the Pugmarks of a male lion and followed it cautiously. He made us come down to our Jeeps and took us several meters inside the woods. We had our first glimpse of the King of the Jungle. He displayed his majestic walk in front of us and disappeared in the jungle. It was a very satisfying feeling for all of us. There are only 359 Lions left in this sanctuary which is about 1400 sq kms in area.
We left for Diu island next day, which was the centre of our water sports activities. It was for long a Portugese colony but was given a Union Territory status after independence by the Govt of India. We stayed here for three days and enjoyed lovely beaches called Nagoa beach, Mandir beach, Jullundhar beach etc. We took up with water sports activities like water scooters ride, speed boars ride, beach games and wave rides on the clean beaches of Diu island. We also visited the historical Portugese fort on this island. It has not been converted into a jail. It also has a lovely lighthouse. Huge waves of Arabian sea bang at the fort walls and create a very loud sound throughout the day. We also visited the INS Khurki Memorial. In 1971 war, 18 officers and 170 sailors drowned with this ship near Diu. We paid our homage to these martyrs of the nation.
Next day after Diu, we went to stay at Veraval and visited the historical Somnath temple on the shore of Arabian Sea. It is a very grand temple of Lord Shiva and one of the twelve Jyotirlingam of our country. In front of this new temple lies the ruins of original Somnath temple which was looted and demolished several times by the muslim rulers. We also watched a very exquisite light and sound show about the history of Somnath temple.
Our next destination was Dwarka, one of the four ‘Dham’ in our country. We visited Dwarka shrine which is also on the shore of Arabian Sea and also attended the ‘Aarti’ in the evening. Next morning after a lovely swin at the crystal clear beach of Dwarka, we went to visit the Shrine of ‘Bet Dwarka’. It is a small island where we sent through motor boats. It was supposed to be Lord Krishna’s residential place and his friend Sudama offered his gift to Lord Krishna here in the Mahabharatha age.
Some night , we left for Ahemdabad where we reached early in the morning. We visited the famous Akshar Dham temple built by the ‘Swami Narayan Trust’. We also watched the beautiful exhibitions here. We were all amazed to see the creativity displayed in these exhibitions.
Our last destination was Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan. It was a very soothing experience to stay here as the weather was very pleasant in the scorching month of May. We went to Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of Aravalies, and visited Sun Set Point, Peace park, Nakki Lake and did a lot of shopping here. We also took up with a small jungle treak to Toad rock.
We came back to Mayo on the morning of 13th May with fond memories of the tour. This trip has proved to be very fulfilling. Lion safari, visits of historical forts, water sports activities, beach games, visits to shrines and temples and stay at a hill station, what also one could ask for in a trip ! These 13 days served us great lessons of cooperation, sharing and caring and adventure. We all are highly indebted to our great institution, Mayo College, to have provided us with such a great experience. May this tradition of Junior School last for ever.
