Mighty and majestic, standing tall,
Looking over the grassland they continue to rise.
Protecting God creatures both big and small,
The echoing sounds of nature abounds.
Atop their peaks collecting crystals,
The whiteness is so pure and clean.
Icicles glimmer so they can be seen,
A crisp chill is in the air.
48 boys of Junior School Mayo College, Ajmer went for yet another high altitude trekking expedition to Saattal and Devghat in Gangotri region of Uttarakhand under the guidance of the Headmaster Mr Pramod Chaturvedi. The teachers who accompanied the group were Mrs J Chaturvedi, Mr Paresh Mahawar, Mr Seetal Savita and Mr Alexender Hayes from U.K.
Several preparatory treks were organized in the Aravali Hills around Ajmer throughout the Spring Term to make the boys physically strong and mentally sturdy for high altitude trekking.
Before the beginning of the expedition, boys took holy dip in river Ganga at Har Ki Pauri, the largest of several sacred ghats at Haridwar and attended Ganga Arti and prayed for a successful trekking expedition.
On the way to Harsil the group halted at Chamba and got opportunity to visit Tihri Dam. Boating in Tihri lake was a thrilling experience for everyone. The group took dip in the hot water Sulphur Spring at Gangarani. It was a delight to the trekkers. We left the place totally charged and rejuvenated and reached ‘Harsil’ known as the Switzerland of India.
After resting a while the group went for an uphill trek along the Jalindri river and thick Deovdaar forest. Everyone was amazed to see the spectacular view of Harsil Valley. This was an acclimatization trek.
Next day we went for the most challenging trek to Saattal (Altitude 3450 m). It was a treat to the trekkers to see the calm lakes at such a high altitude. They look like a perfect mirror for the peaceful towering mountains all around the place overhead was blue sky with fluffy white clouds. The trekkers found a cave full of snow there and some of them went into it All appreciated the serenity and tranquillity of the place.
Our final destination was the Gangotri. Group trekked from Lanka upto Bhairo Ghati and crossed the highest altitude suspension bridge of India. It was frightening to see the depth of the valley but pleasant to go through the thick pipe forest. The group relaxed at a road side ‘Dhaba’ and enjoyed chilled real juice and cream biscuits. It was very refreshing. After reaching Gangotri, the group went for the fourth trek in the National park of Gangotri. It was a trek towards ‘Gaumukh’. The boys were amazed to see the beauty of Gangotri valley. They clicked photograph to cherish memory of the visit. The following day the group went to pay homage to Maa Gangotri and thanked mother Gangotri for successful completion of four treks. The shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3200 m surrounded by deodars and pines. It is believed that Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva on a slab of rock "Bhagirath Shila" situated near the temple. Submerged in the river there is a natural Shivling where, according to mythology, Lord Shiva sat when he received the Goddess Ganga in his matted locks.
The trek of PANDAV GUFA was a delight for nature lovers. The path crossing the dense pine forest, numerous waterfall and natural cave was an exhilarating experience for the young trekkers. This very site is believed to be the place, where the Pandavas of Mahabharata meditated on their way to The Kailash. After reaching the destination, the boys enjoyed singing group wise.
Climb on dear friend, reach for that hold
Move past the signs of failing strength.
Now grip tight that cutting fold-
One move up the rocky length.
Tight clutching firm and breathing hard,
One step closer to the end,
Your mind firm set on pulling through.
Drive on, drive on my dearest friend,
Ignore the pain of fingers scarred
Climb up the rock to conquer you
The group awaited for the Rock Climbing and Rappelling at Chamba. Each one accomplished the task enthusiastically. Agile boys have done it easily, While weak one achieved the target with motivation from others.
The water is flowing with rage,
it splashes and bubbles, hurtles and troubles,
anyone who is near.
The water is flowing downstream,
pulling pebbles, pinecones, and people.
It's roaring in the ears of the raftors,
who are hollering to be heard over the white foaming water.
Rafting from Brahmpuri to NIM beach was most awaited event. After putting on the necessary safety equipment, the raft-guide delivered a safety talk to the group. We went down with our rafts, where we were trained a bit more on our paddling skills, before we went downstream where the real rafting began. It was full of thrill and adventure.
Poster designing, Group Singing and Group Skit competitions were held during the trek to develop leadership qualities, team spirit and creativity.
Visit to Indian Military Academy at Dehradun was very inspiring to young Mayoites. At the Shaheed Smarak group paid their homage to the Indian Army Officers who sacrificed their lives for safety and security of the Nation.
